Water Rates

As of 1999, water companies may not disconnect or restrict water supplies, even if accounts are in arrears. If a water provider threatens to do this, the debtor has the right to complain to the industry regulator, OFWAT. Often a provider will use the excuse that they believed a property was empty in order to affect a disconnection. To avoid this, the debtor should ensure they make and stay in contact with the water company. If repayments are not made, the water company is still entitled to pursue the debt by securing a CCJ as is the case with regular creditors. Recent new rulings state a debtor may be entitled to assistance with payments to a water company if they are in a state of hardship, ill health or in receipt of various benefits.
